The New York Rendokan offers the following courses of instruction SHORIN-RYU KARATE as taught by Eizo Shimabukuro, Hanshi. The traditional approach to learning martial arts through the study of form and technique. Training is comprised primarily of the following: Exercise (Taiso). Traditional exercises and methods of strength training, including the use of machiwara (punching board) and partner exercises. Form (Kata). Shorin-ryu has a total of 24 formal exercises, drawn from the three great traditions of Okinawan karate: Shuri-te, Tomari-te and Naha-te, as well as Okinawan kobujutsu. The study and practice of form is th ekeystone of our classes. Tomari-te Tradition: Five forms from Chotoku Kyan: Seisan; Annanku; Wanshu; Gojushiho; and Chinto. Shuri-te Tradition. Twelve forms from Ankho Itosu/Chosin Chibana: Naihanchin 1 - 3; Pinan 1 - 5; Pasai Sho/Dai; Kusanku Sho/Dai Naha-teTradition. Two forms, from Chojun Miyagi: Seiunchin; Sanchin. Kumite. Techniques derived from the forms and the experiance of Grandmaster Shimabukuro. Comprised of Basic Techniques, Escape Techniques, Joint-breaking and pressure points KOBUDO (Traditional Weaponry) Five Forms and kumite techniques from the traditions of Okinawan weapons, transmitted to Grandmaster Shimbukuro by Chotoku Kyan and Shinken Taira: Toei no Sai (Chatanyara no Sai); Towada no Sai; Tokumine no Kon; Sakugawa no Kon; Toei no Kama Kobudo Kumite. Practical applications derived from the kata. Sai vs. Bo; Bo vs. Bo; Kama vs. Bo; Defense against sword, etc. TOEI-RYU JUJUTSU. This form of self defense was developed by Grandmaster Shimabukuro based on his seventy years of martial arts experience. It is comprised of nearly 400 techniques utilizing his knowledge of the human body's strengths and weaknesses. |
